ADDRESS OF POPE LEO XIV
TO STEWARDS, TRUSTEES AND MEMBERS
OF THE PAPAL FOUNDATION
May
During his Sunday Easter address, the Pope reflected on Jesus’s promise at the Last Supper to prepare a place for everyone in his Father’s house, emphasizing that every person holds infinite worth in God’s eyes and need not compete for recognition or prestige. He contrasted the world’s obsession with exclusivity and status with the new world Jesus reveals — one of welcome, gratitude, and fraternity — urging the faithful to embrace faith as the key that frees the heart from anxiety. After the Regina Caeli, he marked World Press Freedom Day by remembering journalists harmed by war and violence, and warmly greeted several visiting groups, including the Meter Association, celebrating thirty years of work protecting minors from abuse.

The Pope welcomed the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities USA to Rome, acknowledging the real challenges they face in serving the poor while reminding them that Christ’s promise — “I am with you always” — sustains their work. He affirmed that caring for those in need is central to the Gospel, as love for one’s neighbor is tangible proof of love for God. Through their practical assistance, they allow the disadvantaged to experience God’s love and open a path toward a lasting relationship with him. He encouraged them to let the hope of Easter guide their mission, and closed by imparting his Apostolic Blessing to them and all associated agencies.

The Pope reflected on the eschatological dimension of the Church, describing her as the “universal sacrament of salvation” — a sign and instrument of God’s Kingdom, living between the “already” of Christ’s coming and the “not yet” of its final fulfilment. As a pilgrim people, the Church reads history through the Gospel, speaking out against evil and injustice while serving the poor and suffering. She humbly acknowledges that her institutions are imperfect and in constant need of conversion and renewal. United in the communion of saints, the living and the departed form one Church, most fully expressed in the liturgy, where together they praise God and await the fullness of His Kingdom.

The Pope welcomed staff of the Libreria Editrice Vaticana to mark its centenary, celebrating 100 years of serving nine Popes and spreading the Gospel through publishing. He offered three reflections on the value of books: as an opportunity for thought and critical reflection, as a bridge for human encounter and dialogue, and as a means of proclaiming Christ and nourishing the soul with God’s Word. He drew on the example of Mary and the Saints to highlight how sacred reading shapes Christian thinking and living. Echoing Pope Paul VI’s words from the 50th anniversary, he encouraged the team to look ahead with dedication and passion, and offered his blessing to them and their families.
